three D: Dine, Drink, Discover

Led by Amy Greenwald, Jill Hirsch and Jillian Posner, the three D committee delivered on its promise to give guests an evening to Dine, Drink and Discover something new at the Rubell Family Collection on Friday, March 1. Their efforts, combined with the generosity of sponsors and more than 300 attendees, raised nearly $150,000 for the cure-focused work of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI.) 

Among intriguing works of art and astounding entertainment, partygoers noshed on passed hors d’oeuvres and sipped wine as they mingled in the gallery, energized by the sounds of DJ Danny Stern. Hanging from chandeliers, bartenders from Aerial Artistry poured sparkling wine and Stoli Salted Caramel Appletini shots into glasses extended by guests below. Performances by Golden Diva Dancers, a gravity-defying Slinky character, and members of the Dance Now! contemporary dance company permeated the crowd. On the outdoor terrace, David Berman of Sculptured Ice Occasion crafted an elegant woman holding the DRI’s logo out of a block of ice while his audience enjoyed cocktails made with Hendricks Gin, Stoli Voldka, and Sailor Jerry Rum, courtesy of William Grant & Sons.

Special guest Ron Darling, former MLB pitcher and current color commentator, gave pause for the cause, saying, “I am here for one reason – to support the Diabetes Research Institute.”  After divulging that his son, now 19, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 11, Darling expressed his belief that a cure will come from the DRI, where he continually shows his dedication as a member of the DRI Foundation’s national board of directors.

The live auction, led by Flip Gassman and Ricky Schatz, featured a VIP Los Angeles vacation package, an African safari, and a dinner for 12 at Copperbox, the Design District’s “underground” private dining room. Executive ChefGabriela Machado was present to explain the prize, which ignited a bidding war that she ended by donating a second dinner! Using BidPal, guests vied for silent auction items, as well. Among the nearly 200 items were tickets to Dancing with the Stars, Chelsea Lately and The Ellen Degeneres Show, a Maserati rental, two weeks At Camp Bauercrest & Camp Waziyatah, a phone call with Bravo TVs Pregnant in Heels Star Rosie Pope, a day with South Florida’s favorite entertainment reporter, Lisa Petrillo, and much more!
